St Patrick’s Festivities

Of course, the fun doesn’t stop on Saturday. On St. Patrick’s Day The Backstreet Pub will also be hosting its annual St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza and Costume Contest with Todd Barnes & The Wild Hares. From 3 pm to 2 am, get your green on and don’t miss out on one of the best parties around. Start with Todd Barnes & the Wild Hares playing from 3 pm to 7pm. Enjoy free shepherd’s pie at 4 pm to help you soak up all of that Guinness. The big costume party is at 5 pm. Plus, there will be door prizes, more free schwag, and Guinness and Jameson deals all day long.

For a more family friendly celebration, there’s the Emerald Isle St. Patrick’s Festival on March 16, 2024, at the Emerald Plantation Shopping Center. The 31st Annual St. Patrick’s Festival serves up an unforgettable day filled with fun, laughter, and celebration. Starting at 9 am and running through 6pm, visitors can enjoy amusement rides, with thrills for all ages. There will also be two stages of live music, with the main stage in the beer garden, for those 21 and older, and a family friendly second stage for all ages. As well as the live music and beer garden, there will be arts and crafts and more! If you can’t wait to start celebrating, there will be a special amusement ride armband event from 3-8 pm on Friday. It’s a fun way to get your blood pumping for an entertaining St. Patrick’s Day weekend celebration.

Discover the Old Burying Ground in Beaufort NC

One of the most intriguing places to explore is the Old Burying Ground on Ann Street. Founded in the early 1700s, it’s the oldest cemetery in Beaufort. Walking through the cemetery is like time traveling into the past, with old tombstones and vaults shaded by large trees. The vast majority of the graves date from before the 20th century, with 200 or so dating from before the Civil War. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the most famous graves in the cemetery is that of a girl who died on board a ship coming home from a trip to England in the mid-1700s. Her grave is marked by cypress slab with the words “Little Girl Buried in Rum Keg” on it. Apparently her father put her body in a rum keg to preserve it during the trip home to North Carolina. Over the years people have reported sightings of her ghost, and some visitors have left toys on her grave.

Another remarkable grave is the resting place of Otway Burns, a naval hero during the War of 1812. He is buried under a cannon from his ship.

The Old Burying Ground is open year-round every day except Sunday. Guided tours are offered by reservation. Visitors can also download an app for self-guided tours. The tours are arranged and led by members of the Beaufort Historical Association.

Beaufort Pirate Invasion

Get ready to set sail on an epic adventure at the Beaufort Pirate Invasion! This annual event commemorates Beaufort’s pirate history and other related historic events with plenty of fun and informative events to thrill all ages. After more than 60 years, the festival involve various recreations of the Spanish invasion as well as events recognizing the long history of pirates and shipping along this stretch of the Carolina coast. Today, pirates hold a special fascination, in part due to their autonomy and daring deeds.

The festival takes place around Gallants Channel from September 22-24, 2023.
