One of the most intriguing places to explore is the Old Burying Ground on Ann Street. Founded in the early 1700s, it’s the oldest cemetery in Beaufort. Walking through the cemetery is like time traveling into the past, with old tombstones and vaults shaded by large trees. The vast majority of the graves date from before the 20th century, with 200 or so dating from before the Civil War. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the most famous graves in the cemetery is that of a girl who died on board a ship coming home from a trip to England in the mid-1700s. Her grave is marked by cypress slab with the words “Little Girl Buried in Rum Keg” on it. Apparently her father put her body in a rum keg to preserve it during the trip home to North Carolina. Over the years people have reported sightings of her ghost, and some visitors have left toys on her grave.

Another remarkable grave is the resting place of Otway Burns, a naval hero during the War of 1812. He is buried under a cannon from his ship.

The Old Burying Ground is open year-round every day except Sunday. Guided tours are offered by reservation. Visitors can also download an app for self-guided tours. The tours are arranged and led by members of the Beaufort Historical Association.

Their attention to detail and understanding of what homeowners are looking for in every home they build is clear from the rave reviews they receive. Brooks and Keri Bachelor are one of the many satisfied homeowners.

Brooks and Kari Bachelor are no strangers to having homes built. Brooks has been involved in the building of eight homes and he and Kari have built four together, already current Beau Coast residents, building a custom home in Peninsula was the right fit for them. They started by having a meeting with some of the Streamline Developers team, because they already knew Streamline’s work and wanted them to be involved in the building of their new coastal home. Streamline is a full service, licensed North Carolina new home builder who works with experienced designers, project managers, and builders to make your vision a reality.

As the Bachelors explain, just about everyone at Streamline Developers was involved and made sure everything was clear, right from the start, before any work was started. Communication is a key element of working with Streamline, as the couple received daily updates and had weekly meetings, something Brooks says he’d never experienced in previous builds and really appreciated. “We’ve had weekly meetings, every week”, says Brooks. “I’ve never had a contractor set up weekly meetings for me during the construction phase. It’s been a real help for us.”

One of the reasons why they decided to build at Peninsula is its location. As Kari explains, “We loved the area. It’s one of the few places where you can ride a golf cart downtown, ride your bikes downtown. It just has so much to offer. We have children and grandchildren and we knew that they would love to come visit and enjoy the amenities that Beau Coast has to offer. So it was just a natural fit for our family.”

Building a custom home is always an experience, but the Bachelors feel it has been a wonderful experience and Streamline has become a part of their family and they’ve become a part of the Streamline family.

If you’re interested in building your own custom coastal home at Peninsula or want to purchase a ready-built home, turn to Streamline Developers, a leading home builder in Beaufort NC and a preferred Beau Coast builder. You’ll soon be joining the ranks of their satisfied homeowners.
