Beau Coast Sip-n-Shop

Explore the Art of Boat Building

When looking for coastal homes in Beaufort NC, home buyers often want to take advantage of the many water-based activities found in this charming and picturesque town. Plus, the NC Maritime Museum is offering an Introduction to Wooden Boat Building course this month.

The two-day course takes place October 18-19, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. The class fee is $200 ($180 for Friends of the Museum) and participants must be 16 or older. The class size is limited and advance registration is required. By the end of the course, you should have the knowledge to create your own wooden boat. Imagine sailing the coastal waters in a boat you built yourself, harkening back to residents throughout the area’s rich history.

Boat building is an art and you’ll learn the terminology and skills necessary to build your own. This hands-on course will start off with lofting, in which you take the plans of a boat and draw them out to full size. Then you move on to the setup building the frame, as well as learning steam bending to shape the wood, and different methods of creating the backbone of small boats. You’ll also learn planking methods, both carvel and lapstrake, and the use of appropriate fasteners, along with the various tools and materials necessary.

By the end of the course, you’ll have the knowledge, skill, and confidence to choose a design and style of boat to build on your own. With the various boat access ramps along the coast of Beaufort, it’s easy to test the seaworthiness of your boat and get out and enjoy the stunning coastal scenery.

The wooden boat building course is just one of the many classes and events going on regularly throughout the year at the NC Maritime Museum. Christmas in Beaufort NC

Christmas in Beaufort is a wonderful time of year as the town transforms into its own coastal winter wonderland. You’ll find a fantastic mix of events for all ages to get into the holiday spirit, but as you decorate your coastal homes in Beaufort NC, be sure to leave December 7 free for all of the activities that day! Here are just a few of the festive Christmas events that celebrate the season’s charm, history, and community spirit.

What better way to start the festivities than Pancakes with Santa! This delightfully delicious event is hosted by the Beaufort Firemen’s Association. It takes place Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 8 – 10 am at Beaufort Fire Station #1, located at 506 Live Oak Street. You’ll enjoy a tasty pancake breakfast and a chance to meet Santa Claus. Don’t forget your camera for photos with Santa! Tickets are $10 for ages 12 and up, and $6 for children under 12.

After your pancake breakfast, make your way over to the waterfront to take in the Beaufort Business Association’s Christmas Parade that starts at noon and finishes up around 1 pm on December 7, 2024. You’re likely to see some of your friends and favorite local businesses taking part in the parade with a range of decorated floats that offer cheer and festive  fun for the whole family.

For a uniquely Beaufort take on a holiday parade, don’t miss the Friends of the Maritime Museum and their annual Holiday Flotilla on December 7, 2024, from 5:30-7:30 pm. Boats that include yachts, oars, kayaks and commercial vessels are decked out for the season with lights and more. They can be seen at 5:30 p.m. on the Morehead City waterfront and at 6:15 p.m. on the Beaufort waterfront. All vessels proceed east down Taylor’s Creek to the Beaufort Hotel where judges will pick their favorites.

There are more events the following week, including the The 30th Annual John Costlow Christmas Train Show in memory of Doug Doubleday. The annual show features antique working model trains and model trains of all sizes. The train layouts range from simple circles traditionally found around the Christmas tree to more elaborate layouts. It takes place Friday, December 13, 2024, from 4-7 pm, Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 12-4 pm at the Harvey J Smith Watercraft Center at 326 Front Street. Admission is free, but donations are welcome and will be given to the Beaufort Lions Club.

Finally, don’t miss the Beaufort Holiday Art Walk, December 14, 2024, from 1-5 pm in Historic Downtown Beaufort. Enjoy a wide variety of art from regional artists throughout many of the downtown shops, galleries and restaurants. The Art Walk begins at The Beaufort Historic Site.

Beau Coast Gives Back

At Beau Coast, we take our role in the community of Beaufort, NC, seriously. Along with all of the amenities we offer our residents, the town itself is one of the main reasons people want to live here in our wonderful coastal homes in Beaufort NC. This is why we help sponsor various events throughout the year, as well as organize our own opportunities to give back to the community.

We are currently hosting our Fall Food Drive, running through November 18, 2024. This is an opportunity for people to Give Food and Give Thanks to benefit those in need. All food donations will be given to Martha’s Mission Food Pantry, an emergency food pantry – run solely by volunteers – helping Carteret County residents in need. In an effort to maximize donations, we are partnering with Beaufort Grocery to enter to win, a Thanksgiving Dinner for 8 for every bag of items donated. There’s no entry limit, so be generous! Drop-offs can be done at the Front Street office and Streamline Developer’s Sales Center in Beau Coast West.

This month we’re also taking part in an American Red Cross Blood Drive. Sponsored by Streamline Developers and Preston Development Company. The event will take place on November 27, 2024, in the ballroom of the Beaufort Hotel. The blood drive is being held from 11 am to 3 pm to give you plenty of time to make such an important donation, though it’s recommended to call Kristen Willis at 252-341-1325 to make an appointment. As a thank you, all donors will receive two pairs of custom FRIENDS and Red Cross socks while supplies last.
